Conventional wisdom has always favored early risers. Going to bed before the eleven o’clock news and getting up at the crack of dawn seems to be more virtuous than staying up until 3 a.m. and sleeping in. But is there any truth to the phrase “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”? Recent findings seem to suggest otherwise. Here are 5 reasons night owls may just have the upper hand after all.
1. Night owls might be smarter … and more successful.
Evening people score higher than morning people on general intelligence tests, according to a study by the University of Madrid. Night owls also possess the kind of intelligence linked to higher incomes and more prestigious jobs.
2. Night owls are healthier and more relaxed.
People who wake up earlier tend to have higher levels of cortisol, a hormone that causes stress. Cortisol contributes to high-blood pressure and long-term heart problems.
3. Night owls are more creative.
A study found evening people scored highly on tests that evaluated their “originality, elaboration, fluidity and flexibility factors.” Morning people had much more difficulty in these areas.
4. Night owls are adventurous.
A University of Barcelona study found that night owls have a “higher tendency to explore the unknown.”
5. Night owls have more active social lives.
After a hard day at work, early birds need to get to bed, but night owls have the energy to enjoy long dinners or drinks with friends, forming stronger social bonds and deeper friendships.
